Individual Therapy (Mental Health Counseling)
I provide individual counseling services, also known as psychotherapy, on a weekly, bi-weekly, or as-needed basis. Individual therapy can help you gain understanding of your past or present issues, and can help you manage life stressors in your future.
Marital Therapy / Couples Counseling
Working on relationships with your significant other or family unit is especially beneficial in a therapy setting. Let me help you develop better communication and a better home environment by engaging in therapy. I have completed Level 1 & Level 2 Gottman training and use these principles in guiding couple back to one another in their love.
Chemical Dependency Evaluations / Substance Use Evaluations / DUI Assessments
Chemical dependency evaluations are necessary following alcohol- or drug-related legal charges, or if a person is voluntarily seeking substance use treatment in a higher level of care. In completing the evaluation, I utilize the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), which is a semi-structured interview designed to address seven potential problem areas in substance-abusing clients: medical status, employment and support, drug/alcohol use, legal status, family and social status, and psychiatric status. The ASI is accepted and preferred by most courts, probation offices, and treatment providers in the Nebraska and surrounding areas.
Level I Outpatient Substance Use Treatment
This Level I treatment includes individual sessions and group sessions on a weekly basis. This treatment is may be engaged in voluntarily, but also adheres to the requirements of probation and the Nebraska court system for those with alcohol- or drug-related legal charges.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), also known as talk therapy, is evidence-based and the primary type of treatment provided at Laura Stoner Therapy Services. The premise of this therapy is to address the underlying thoughts and emotions that contribute to negative behaviors or life stressors you are experiencing. The awareness gained with CBT, in combination with various aspects of other treatment modalities like Solution-Focused Therapy, enable clients to set reachable goals and overcome their present distress.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an incredibly effective evidenced-based treatment that reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma/PTSD. It uses bi-lateral brain stimulation through eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones to stimulate the processing of past traumatic memories. This therapy can desensitize triggers to traumatic memories so clients are no longer paralyzed with panic, anxiety, and sadness. I am a Level I and II trained clinician since September 2014. More information about EMDR and how this process is effective can be found on the EMDRIA website.
Internal Family Systems Theory (IFS) is often utilized in combination with EMDR. This theory suggests that humans are made up of several internal "parts," including insecurities and defense mechanisms (a.k.a. protector parts). IFS allows us to address the protector parts of my clients that may be causing extreme negative consequences in their lives and develop an understanding of how these parts were developed. Gaining insight about these parts enables my clients to learn new, healthy ways of coping with present life stressors. More information on the IFS theory can be found here.
The Gottman Method for Healthy Relationships is a form of couples-based therapy and education that draws on the pioneering studies of relationships by psychologist John M. Gottman and clinical practice conducted by John Gottman and his wife, psychologist Julie Gottman. Nearly 40 years of research have led John Gottman to identify the elements it takes for relationships to last—among all types of couples across all phases of life. This structured therapy focuses on developing understanding and skills so that partners can maintain fondness and admiration, turn toward each other to get their needs met (especially when they are hurting), manage conflict, and enact their dreams—and what to do when they mess up (because everyone does).
